Short answer
For one room or a closet, a 5 x 10. For a one-bedroom apartment, a 10 x 10. For a two-bedroom home, a 10 x 15. For a three-bedroom house or a car, a 10 x 20. If you are between two sizes, take the bigger one.
How to work it out
- List the big pieces first: beds, couches, dressers, tables and appliances.
- Count your boxes and totes. Twenty or thirty medium boxes take up about as much room as a couch.
- Add anything long, like a kayak, ladder or rug.
Quick guide
- 5 x 10 (50 sq ft): a walk-in closet's worth. A mattress set, a dresser and boxes.
- 10 x 10 (100 sq ft): a one-bedroom apartment.
- 10 x 15 (150 sq ft): a two-bedroom home with appliances.
- 10 x 20 (200 sq ft): a three-bedroom house, or a car.
