Storage Tips
How to pack, load and look after the things you store.
Before you move in
- Make a list of the big items first, such as beds, couches and appliances, then count boxes. If you are between two sizes, the larger one usually saves a second trip.
- Use boxes of the same size so they stack well, and label every box on two sides.
- We provide the first lock for your unit. If you ever replace it, a disc or cylinder lock is the hardest to cut.
Loading your unit
- Put the things you will need least at the back and the things you might need soon near the door.
- Take beds and tables apart and stand mattresses and couches on end.
- Leave a walkway down the middle in a 10 x 15 or 10 x 20 so you can reach the back.
- Keep heavy boxes on the bottom and light ones on top.
Taking care of your things
- Put pallets or plastic sheeting under furniture so it is not sitting on the concrete.
- Cover furniture with sheets or moving blankets, not plastic, so it can breathe in the Alabama humidity.
- Drain the fuel from mowers and small engines before you store them.
- Add a tenant protection plan so your things are covered.
What you cannot store
- Gasoline, propane, paint thinner and anything else flammable or explosive
- Food, pet food and anything perishable
- Live animals and plants
- Illegal items of any kind
- Anything that smells or leaks
Nobody may live or sleep in a storage unit. If you are not sure whether something is allowed, call us before you bring it.
