What kind of lock should I use on a storage unit?

Renting and access · Updated October 5, 2026

Short answer

Use a disc lock or a cylinder lock. They have little or no exposed shackle, so bolt cutters cannot get a grip. A standard padlock works, but it is the easiest kind to cut. At SB Storage we provide the first lock for your unit.

Disc locks

Round, with a shackle that is almost completely covered. The most common choice for storage units and easy to find at hardware stores.

Cylinder locks

Fit into the latch of some unit doors with no shackle showing at all. Very hard to cut or pry.

Replacing your lock

If you lose the key or want a different lock, these tips help:

  • Buy a lock rated for outdoor use so it does not rust shut.
  • Keep the spare key at home, not in your car.
  • Do not use a combination lock with an easy code.
