Short answer
Clean and dry the mattress, put it in a breathable mattress bag, and store it flat on a clean platform or on its side against a wall. Do not stack heavy things on top, and do not seal it in plastic for months in humid weather.
Flat or on its side?
Flat is best for the springs and padding over months, but it takes floor space. For a few weeks or in a small unit, standing it on its long edge against the wall is fine.
Steps
- Vacuum it and let it air out for a day.
- Slip it into a mattress bag. Cloth bags breathe; if you use plastic, leave the end open a little.
- Keep it off the floor on a pallet or the bed frame's slats.
- Keep boxes off the top.
A mattress set, a dresser and boxes fit in a 5 x 10.
