Short answer
SB Storage units are drive-up units without climate control, so keep furniture off the concrete on pallets or plastic, cover it with breathable cloth instead of plastic wrap, leave a little space between pieces and the walls, and put moisture absorbers in the unit. Clean and dry everything before it goes in.
Why it matters in north Alabama
Summers in the Shoals are hot and humid. Moisture trapped against wood, fabric or leather is what leads to mildew and warping.
Do
- Set furniture on pallets, 2x4s or a plastic sheet so it is not touching the slab.
- Cover with moving blankets, old sheets or breathable furniture covers.
- Leave a few inches between furniture and the walls.
- Put a couple of moisture absorber tubs in the unit and replace them every month or two in summer.
- Treat wood with polish and leather with conditioner first.
Do not
- Shrink-wrap wood or upholstered furniture. It traps moisture.
- Store anything damp, even slightly.
- Put photos, documents or electronics directly on the floor.
