How should I pack a storage unit?

Packing and storing · Updated October 5, 2026

Short answer

Put the things you will need least at the back and the things you might need soon near the door. Take furniture apart, stand mattresses and couches on end, use same-size boxes stacked heavy to light, and leave a walkway in any unit 10 x 15 or bigger.

Before moving day

  • Use boxes of two or three standard sizes so they stack square.
  • Label every box on two sides, not the top.
  • Wrap furniture in moving blankets or sheets.

Loading the unit

  1. Lay down pallets or plastic sheeting on the floor.
  2. Big furniture and appliances go along the back and sides.
  3. Stack boxes heavy on the bottom, light on top, no more than head height.
  4. Leave a walkway to the back.
  5. Last in: things you might need, near the door.

After

Take a picture of the unit and keep a simple list of what is in it. It helps with insurance and saves you digging.
